A very hungry White Lined Sphinx Caterpillar Head, Hyles lineata, Anza Borrego, California. While many caterpillars become fodder for the migrating Swainson's Hawks, those that survive turn into the White Lined Sphinx Moth, nearly the size of a small humming bird. The color of the caterpillar varies based upon what they ate. The were part of what the Native American's ate. Caterpillars were eviscerated and dried. Some proportion of the Swainson's Hawks have figured out that gutting the caterpillars makes them taste much better.
