Face of a Monarch, Macro Image
Composite image stack focused - Cropped image 4606 x 4594
Monarchs have amazed me. It has fascinated me at what you can see when you get a close enough view. You can see the seam in the coiled proboscis of the monarch. When a monarch butterfly first emerges the proboscis is split and part of the process in getting ready to fly is to fuse the parts into a tube. You can see the facets in the eyes and the joints in the antennae. The black "hairs" are modified scales with plumes on a stalk. The white spots are long flat scales and not hairlike at all."
