Monarch Caterpillar Late Instars, 4th and 5th

Monarch 4th and 5th Instar Caterpillars on Milkweed. The two in the middle are Cat 4 and the two outter caterpillars are Cat 5, note the longer antennae.

Follow the Monarch Life Cycle - 4th and 5th Instar Monarch Caterpillars may start to eat their way out of a food supply. This is not an altogether bad problem. It is at this stage that they develop into local or migratory butterflies. Caterpillars can travel quite some distance in the search of more milkweed. When they have finally gotten their fill and developed enough the Monarch Caterpillars will hang in a J shape.
